Honoring Your “Birth” Day

What better way than a birthday to honour one’s Self? At the time of writing this, I passed a milestone birthday. I celebrated in the way I wanted to and will continue to celebrate through other events the rest of April (nowhere does it say the celebration of our arrival on earth should only be limited to one day)! Some years ago, I decided to take responsibility for how I wanted to honour my own coming into this world instead of letting others try to surprise me (I’m not one to be easily surprised which made it tough on my loved ones)! After my daughter passed away, besides no longer having the desire or energy to celebrate birthdays as I once did, I encouraged those around me to really think about their day of birth in a meaningful way, one that would help them understand their reason for being on the planet, and celebrate accordingly rather than let someone else decide for them how this should be done (surprise party anyone?). Not only did this remove the responsibility to plan birthdays for loved ones from my shoulders, but motivated them to honour their lives in a new way.

Additionally, and while I appreciate prettily packaged gifts from others, of late my desire has shifted to me wanting to honour my birthday by creating unique and profound experiences that bring joy to my life, rather than receiving gifts from others that clutter my closet. In deciding what these experiences will be, I give thought ahead of my important day to what I feel will enhance my experience at the particular juncture I am facing. This year, I plan to interact with dolphins. It has long been a goal of mine to participate in a week long dolphin retreat in open waters. However, I’m not quite ready to commit to that adventure, so the next best thing is to interact with dolphins in a controlled environment to test my reaction to these beautiful animals up close and personal. Dolphins are known to have healing qualities. I’m not sure if this is true, but I love them and honour their place in our human experience as such.

For your own birthday, whenever that may be, I encourage you to contemplate your role here on the planet and acknowledge, thank and honour yourself for the job you have done and have yet to complete. Decide to regularly nurture your inner desires and for your special day, create a compelling and even unforgettable experience, whether this is done quietly and laid back with no cost, or celebrating with a bigger event to celebrate a major milestone. You are important. You count. Your role is essential to those around you and to the planet at large. It is essential you recognize and honour your contribution to the greater good through your uniqueness and originality. In that vein, I wish you a very Happy Birth Day, whenever that may be and thank you for choosing to be you!

Happy celebrating!
